Most visitors first impression of Bhutan will be during the spectacular approach to the country's only international airport - Paro. As the plane nears landing you'll see either side of you sheer walls of rock as the pilot navigates through the valley. Welcome to the 'Land of the Thunder Dragon'.
Words and pictures can never be enough to describe Bhutan. It is a unique country, with fabulous and rugged scenery and, perhaps more significantly, a unique national identity which they are keen to maintain. This is not a little version of India nor of Tibet with whom the Bhutanese are often (wrongly) compared. Bhutan is a special destination.

Location: Bhutan is a tiny Himalayan kingdom. To its north lies Tibet (well China, but we will leave that debate to another time). To its eastern border lies the Indian state of Sikkim and to the West the Indian state of Assam (both worth visits in their own right).
How to get there: There is currently just one airport in Bhutan - Paro - although a domestic airport is being built in Bumthang which will greatly assist both tourists and locals. Only the national airline, Druk Air, flies into Paro and its fares reflect this monopoly. There are services to Bangkok, Delhi, Calcutta, Gauwathati (Assam), Dhaka, Katmandu and Bagdogra (Bengal). There are no domestic flights nor trains in Bhutan so the only non-walking form of transportation is by bus or car along some spectacular valley and mountain roads. There are several road border crossings into India but no overland routes to China.
Tourist entry requirements: Bhutan is a monarchy and until recently an 'Absolute Monarchy'. Its kings have is overseen a gradual emergence of Bhutan into the wider world. Perhaps in reaction to the dubious influence of western backpackers in neighbouring India, Bhutan practices a “High Value/Low Impact” tourism policy. In other words Bhutan intends to control tourism to manageable numbers while maximising the income. Visas to Bhutan are only issued against a pre-booked itinerary with a minimum spend of US$240 per day plus taxes.
